Integrating Media and Visual Arts into curriculum and into library activity and involvement can look differently than one might expect. In fact, art often increases engagement and excitement in young adults with all subject matter. Art allows teens to look at the world with new eyes, process emotions in healthy ways, and challenges teens to try unique processes of completing tasks.

As a STEAM Magnet Librarian I have had the privilege of working with local artists in discovering how to integrate technology and media to inspire students and challenge them creatively. Throughout the progressional development we practiced collaging, vine making, film photography, stop motion, movie making, and making visual art like exquisite corpses, animation, nulling, and more. Bellow are some examples of art that I made with my colleagues.

Often we doubt our ability, credibility, or right to call ourselves artists and even attempt art. Art is the expression, the attempt. Encouraging art helps teens and even adults build their confidence to try something new to them, to take a chance to make mistakes, and to grow from their experiences. Integrating new technology and art into the mundane creates a ferocity to explore and to create!
